Nandina

This, from Wikipedia: “Nandina domestica commonly known as nandina, heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, is a species of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan. It is the only member of the monotypic genus Nandina.

It’s hardy, is drought and shade tolerant, and the red berries at the end of the season last through the winter. Not bad at all!

Hoary Tick-trefoil (Desmodium canescens)

These are much more populous this year in Timber Branch Park in Alexandria Virginia than in previous years. I wonder why? Is it the dry weather?

Cullen Builds a Desk

Over the weekend I helped my son Cullen build a custom desktop that stretches the width of his bedroom. There were several misadventures along the way including some mis-measured and mis-cut wood, several trips to Home Depot, and a lot of manhandling of 10 foot pieces from his basement up to his top floor and back. But finally we succeeded in cutting the main pieces and the support structure. Next stop: Assembly, staining, and a satin finish. Plus a decision on where to drill the holes for computer equipment power cables.
